This workshop will instruct participants about the do’s and don’ts of Deaf Culture when communicating in sign language. Participants will learn with just a few questions how to match your Deaf consumer’s style or code of sign language preferences. Learn how to circumvent common pitfalls and avoid accidentally insulting a Deaf person when interpreting. This workshop will enhance any participants interpreting skills and enhance their ability to match any Deaf consumers signing style.

Educational Objectives:

The instructor will provide a copy of the Code of Professional Conduct (CPC) and review their current knowledge and understanding and ask Participants throughout the workshop, to identify various tenets and sub-tenets from the CPC.
The Instructor will ask Participants to contribute to the top-down process of identifying an ethical problem, decide what the appropriate solution is and apply the proper tenet and sub-tenets that supports your choice of resolution.
The instructor will test the Participants accuracy of identifying ethical scenarios and situations, choice of solutions and ask for perspectives of the consumer and the interpreter based on the tenets and sub-tenet.
The instructor will provide an ethical situation and ask Participants to identify the Ethical problem, the ethical solution, the Deaf person’s perspective, the Interpreter’s perspective, and the possible impact overall of chosen solution (s).
