This workshop teaches participants how to identify the ‘Signing Style’ of a Deaf consumer. The workshop will cover the value of understanding the individual styles of Deaf consumers and will provide instructions as to what questions to ask during the fact gathering warm-up period. Deaf people raised in America, may have been introduced to several different communication modes and although American Sign Language is the most popular among Deaf adults, as children, they are often introduced to a variety of communication modes and it is the responsibility of the interpreter to possess the necessary skills for each of the various modalities or refer the assignment to the appropriately skilled interpreter.

Educational Objectives:  

 

Participant will recall warmup questions Deaf consumers they are interpreting for to help gather central information that will funnel the interpreter toward understanding the Deaf consumers’ needs and style of sign language communication.
Participant will be able to recall and discuss the importance and impact of the questions to be asked during the pre-assignment period. Participants will be instructed on how to analyze all the answers and determine the best “Style of Signing” approach.
• Participants will review a copy and discuss the importance of the Code of Professional Conduct and specifically recall the importance of 2.0 Professionalism, 4.0 Respect for consumer, and 5.0 Respect for colleagues for the purpose of helping students comprehend how their facial expressions, body language, and attitude impacts the trust, confidence and cooperativeness of the Deaf consumer.
