This workshop will familiarize interpreters with being exposed to vicarious trauma with repeated and sometimes excessive amounts of emotional, physical, sexual and other emotionally heavy topics that may come up in court during a preliminary hearing or court trial. Anytime there is a traumatic situation being interpreted for a Deaf consumer, the interpreter may find themselves needing to hold back feeling overwhelmed and/or holding back your emotional reaction to the traumatic events to maintain your own professionalism. This training will show you how to debrief ‘ethically’ during and after you have been exposed to vicarious trauma.

Educational Objectives:

• Participant will examine and be able to identify the types of trauma that are most likely to impact an interpreter when the victim describes a traumatic event.

Participant will be able to recognize and identify physically and emotionally when they are being affected by a traumatic event story.

• Participant will be able to distinguish and identify when they can no longer maintain their emotional or physical equilibrium and need to recuse themselves.

• Participant will be able to develop a list of at least 3 techniques to help reduce the stress caused from interpreting traumatic events.
